Champagne has always been synonymous of: “we must celebrate”.
Yes, because the moments of life in which you have to celebrate do not happen every day and, nevertheless, sometimes they even go unnoticed. A matter of habit? Rush? Missed opportunity? Given little weight? In the end, the risk is to say: too late.
No, these moments must be celebrated: indeed, big or small ones, they have to be celebrated and shared with family or true friends. And they must be celebrated with a Champagne. Why? Because Champagne means finesse, quality, prestige.
And I choose this Louis Roederer Brut Premier.
Just to put it in context, the Maison Louis Roederer boasts two centuries of history and still belongs to the family (we are at the seventh generation). Its vineyards are located in the three main territories of Champagne: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs.
Their crown jewel is represented by the Cristal line, born in 1876 to satisfy the request of the Tsar of Russia Alexander II asking for an exclusive Champagne, in crystal bottles.
Back to my choice: this blend of 40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier undergoes a maturation in oak barrels for 3 years and a further 6 months rest in bottle after disgorgement.
The color is a brilliant straw yellow, the perlage is very fine and not at all aggressive; an intense pastry bouquet on the nose, followed by a citrus scent of cedar and lime. In the mouth I am surprised by its freshness, as unexpected as it is pleasant. This pronounced freshness encourages drinking, gives that character of vigor and modernity that one would not expect from a Champagne with over 200 years of history behind it. Long and persistent sip, excellent as an aperitif as well as throughout a full meal.
I opened this Champagne to celebrate a page turn in the life of a dear friend of mine: so, let’s celebrate!
